From a Storied Past Comes a Bright Future

The History of the Village at Brookwood

The Village at Brookwood, a nonprofit Life Plan Community in Burlington, NC, opened its doors in 2003 on the site of what was once known as Memorial Hospital of Alamance.

When the hospital closed in 1995, two community leaders — Dr. Jo Watts Williams and Ralph Holt, Jr. — launched efforts to study the feasibility of developing a continuing care retirement community for Burlington.

With positive findings from that analysis, ground was broken for construction of The Village at Brookwood in November 2001. “Brookwood” refers to a geographical section of West Burlington.

Following a merger of Alamance Regional and Cone Health in 2013, The Village at Brookwood became a member of the Cone Health family and was managed by The Well•Spring Group of Greensboro, NC, from 2017-22.

On July 1, 2022, The Village officially joined the nonprofit Well•Spring Group family. Following the 2024 merger between The Well•Spring Group and Brightspire, we are now proud to be part of Kintura, a Greensboro-based nonprofit.

Today, The Village at Brookwood offers a full continuum of care services for older adults, including independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing and memory care.

When The Village at Brookwood first opened, 95 percent of its residents moved in from within a 3-mile radius. Today, we’re home to a broad, diverse group of residents with a wide array of personal and professional backgrounds. Residents of The Village at Brookwood hail from more than half the states throughout the United States, much of North Carolina and more than a half-dozen countries around the world.

Under the leadership of Kintura, The Village of Brookwood now eyes an exciting future of growth and expansion and continuing to deliver an exemplary lifestyle for its residents.
